Crime/Mysteries Edge out Romance/Erotica - Really?

According to a Harris Poll published by Publisher's Weekly, crime and mystery novels have edged out romance, chick lit and erotica. Of course, they only interviewed 2700-ish people.

Personally, I think there are far more people willing to ADMIT they read mysteries, crime novels and sci-fi than there are people willing to ADMIT they read romance and erotica.

In that sense, the study is probably accurate! :P

  1. We publish both science fiction and erotica, which is to say, science fiction erotica. And the more erotica in proportion to the science fiction, the better the book sells. Throw in romance, and you have our top-sellers.

So I'm inclined to agree that it is a matter of what people are willing to admit to.
